Ankle Sprains

Ankle sprains are the most common foot and ankle injuries. Most heal without surgery by using a walking boot for a few weeks to immobilize the joint and give stretched ligaments time to recover. Some severe sprains — notably high ankle sprains that involve the syndesmosis — may fail to heal with conservative care and can require surgical repair.

Other issues, such as, recurrent ankle instability that does not improve with immobilization and physical therapy may be treated surgically, commonly with a ligament repair such as the Broström-Gould procedure, to restore stability and prevent further episodes.

The Brostrom-Gould procedure restores stability to ankle by repairing the collateral ligaments on the outside (lateral) of your ankle. Post-operatively patients are placed in a splint for 2 weeks, then transitioned to a walking boot for another month. Weight bearing on the foot with the walking boot begins after an initial 4 week period of toe-touch weight bearing.
